Xiao Zhubing’s Group Reported the Advances for High-performance Li-S Batteries in J. Mater. Chem. A

Recently, the research team led by Professor Xiao Zhubing from Henan Key Laboratory of Photovoltaic Materials made significant progress in flexible lithium-sulfur batteries. The title is V2C/VO2 Nanoribbon Intertwined Nanosheet Congenetic Dual-Heterostructure for Highly Flexible and Robust Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, which was published in Journal of Materials Chemistry A (impact foctor:12.732).

Fexible electronic devices can be twisted, bent, rolled, or stretched to a certain extent while maintaining their normal functions. Flexible lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered to be one of the most promising candidates because of their high theoretical specific energy (2600 Wh kg-1) and abundant resources. The research team prepared flexible VCOR-VCOS dual heterostructures in which the V2C/VO2 nanoribbon is in situ pillared between the adjacent V2C/VO2 layers during the hydrothermal process. The VCOR-VCOS dual heterostructures cathode with interconnected threedimensional (3D) conductive framework not only could enable fast electron transfer in both the intralayer and interlayer orientations but also offer rich exposed active sites propelling the adsorption and conversion of LiPS. Li-S pouch cells with a mass loading of 6.0 mg cm-2 were assembled. The electrolyte to active material ratio is fixed at a low level of 4.5 mL mg-1. Even more encouragingly, it delivers an initial capacity of 1052 mAh g-1 (corresponding to 6.3 mAh cm-2) at the flat status, and there is no obvious capacity decay after experiencing dynamic bending/folding conditions, which makes it a promising candidate for building future high energy density flexible Li-S batteries.
